New Jersey Pre-K Aide Faces 61 Charges in Child Sexual Assault Investigation

A former pre-kindergarten aide at a New Jersey elementary school has been indicted on 61 criminal charges, including aggravated sexual assault and manufacturing child sexual abuse material. Prosecutors revealed that an investigation uncovered numerous images and videos of students on the individual's electronic devices.

Shaun M. Stebbins, 44, was employed at Woodbine Elementary School in Cape May County from February 2022 until his apprehension on March 29 in neighboring Atlantic County. He had reportedly worked with pre-K students for approximately four years.

Investigation Uncovers Disturbing Evidence

The extensive investigation into Stebbins originated in Atlantic County. In April, authorities from Atlantic County and Somers Point notified prosecutors in Cape May County of a separate sexual assault inquiry involving Stebbins at his residence, which had revealed potential criminal acts within the adjacent county.

A subsequent examination of Stebbins' electronic devices allegedly yielded a significant collection of images and videos depicting students from Woodbine Elementary School. While prosecutors confirmed the discovery, they did not specify the exact number of students involved or the precise timeline during which the illicit material was recorded.

Court documents further detail the disturbing nature of the allegations, stating that Stebbins is accused of filming and performing sexual acts on children within a school bathroom and during designated nap times.

Extensive Charges Filed

On October 30, Cape May County prosecutors formally announced the 61 charges against Stebbins. These include:

  • 29 counts of manufacturing child pornography
  • 5 counts of aggravated sexual assault
  • 13 counts of sexual assault by sexual contact
  • 14 counts of endangering the welfare of a child

Under New Jersey law, the charges for manufacturing child pornography and aggravated sexual assault are classified as first-degree offenses, which typically carry potential prison sentences ranging from 10 to 20 years. The remaining charges are designated as second-degree offenses, generally punishable by five to 10 years in prison.

Official Response and Ongoing Probe

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the commitment of his office to the case. "Children are among our most vulnerable population, and we have a responsibility to protect their safety and well-being," Sutherland stated. "Anyone who harms a child will be held accountable through our justice system."

Stebbins is currently being held at the Atlantic County Correctional Facility as he awaits further court proceedings. The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office continues its investigation into the matter.
