Women's Tennis Association Implements SRY Gene Testing for Player Eligibility

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced a significant update to its player eligibility rules, introducing mandatory genetic testing to determine qualification for competition in the women's professional category. This makes the WTA the latest prominent sports body to adopt such a measure aimed at safeguarding fair play.

Under the revised policy, all players are now required to undergo a one-time screening for the SRY gene. This gene, located on the Y chromosome, plays a crucial role in the development of male sex characteristics. The testing process is straightforward, involving either a cheek swab, a blood sample, or a saliva collection.

Athletes who receive a negative result for the SRY gene will be immediately cleared to participate in WTA Tour events.
