Winnipeg Jets General Manager Confirms Team Open to Trade Discussions for Star Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck

The initial phase of the National Hockey League offseason has been notably dynamic, shifting much of the spotlight from traditional free agency to an increased number of star athletes exploring opportunities to depart their current organizations.

Already this offseason, the Ottawa Senators have finalized a deal sending Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. Concurrently, Dylan Larkin has reportedly requested a move from the Detroit Red Wings, and the future of Zach Werenski with the Columbus Blue Jackets appears uncertain.

Among the most prominent names potentially on the move is Connor Hellebuyck, the Winnipeg Jets’ esteemed goaltender and Olympic standout for Team USA. The general manager of the Jets has now confirmed that the club is actively entertaining proposals from prospective trade partners for the netminder.

Jets GM Confirms Willingness to Listen

“Certainly, as an organization, we're going to listen,” stated Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, as reported by NHL.com. “Everyone saw (Hellebuyck’s) press conference at the end of the year; he was passionate. Certainly, in our exit meetings, we had some frank conversations as well, but again, what happens in those meetings certainly stays private.”

Hellebuyck is presently under contract through the 2031 season and carries an annual salary cap hit of $8.5 million. This contractual commitment suggests that any team acquiring him would likely need to offer a substantial return in a trade package.

However, the opportunity to acquire a generational, top-tier goaltender with three Vezina Trophies on his resume is a rare occurrence, suggesting that such an investment would likely prove worthwhile for an interested franchise.

Hellebuyck's Frustration Following Disappointing Season

The Jets experienced a significant decline in performance during the most recent season, failing to qualify for the playoffs entirely after having secured the Presidents' Trophy in the preceding year. This downturn prompted critical comments from the star goaltender during his season-ending media availability.

“Complacency is not going to get us moving forward, so something has got to happen,” Hellebuyck remarked. “...A lot of times, that’s all you can ask (of teammates) — give your all every single night. As a teammate, I can really rally behind that and really cherish those moments with those guys. But to just put that same product on the ice, I don’t think it worked for a reason.”

The recent NHL Draft on Friday evening saw a flurry of player movements and transactions. This activity raises questions about whether certain teams, particularly those with limited salary cap space such as the Vegas Golden Knights or the Florida Panthers, might be strategically positioning themselves to formulate an offer for Hellebuyck.
