Virginia correctional authorities successfully thwarted a sophisticated attempt to smuggle contraband into a state prison, intercepting a package valued at approximately $324,000. The illicit delivery, suspected to involve a drone, occurred at Sussex I State Prison and included a substantial quantity of suspected methamphetamine and numerous mobile phones.
Details of the Seizure
Staff from the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) discovered the suspicious package at the Sussex I facility around 1:30 a.m. on Monday. A thorough inspection revealed a one-pound bag of suspected methamphetamine, 17 cellphones complete with charging cables, and 20 sheets of paper appearing saturated with an unidentified liquid.
Further examination uncovered additional prohibited items: multiple hex wrenches, three USB Wi-Fi adapters, and two SIM cards. The package also contained an array of other items often considered contraband within a prison setting, including 30 disposable lighters, two cartons of cigarettes, one pound of loose-leaf tobacco, three packs of cigars, two bottles of professional-grade tattoo ink, two bottles of perfume, and two bottles of glue.
VADOC officials calculated the combined street value of these items, if successfully introduced into the prison environment, to be roughly $324,000.

Joseph Walters, Director of the VADOC, issued a statement emphasizing the evolving and intricate methods individuals employ to introduce illegal goods into correctional facilities.
"This investigation serves as a critical reminder that some individuals will utilize advanced techniques in their efforts to smuggle drugs and other dangerous contraband into Virginia Department of Corrections facilities," Walters stated. "I commend our institutional personnel at Sussex I State Prison for their unwavering vigilance and dedication to maintaining the safety and security of our institution."He further added, "Our committed correctional staff and members of the Office of Law Enforcement Services (OLES) are prepared to intercept any hazardous contraband that individuals might attempt to introduce into correctional environments. This ensures the safety and security of our dedicated corrections team members, the incarcerated individuals in our custody, probationers, and citizens across the Commonwealth of Virginia."
The incident remains under active investigation by VADOC's Office of Law Enforcement Services (OLES).
