All United States Air Force strategic bombers previously stationed in the United Kingdom have been recalled to their home bases within the U.S., according to officials. This withdrawal occurred in the wake of an alleged terror plot, which American authorities have indicated might be tied to Iran, targeting a U.S. military facility last week.
"We can acknowledge now that all U.S. bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have re-deployed to their home stations in the United States," a department official confirmed.
Despite the relocation of the bomber fleet, the Pentagon stressed that these aircraft remain fully capable of conducting long-range strike missions directly from the continental United States whenever operational requirements dictate.
An official stated, "The Airmen that operate America’s bomber force, including B-1s, B-2s, and B-52s, remain ready to deliver precision global strike capabilities – including through operations that launch and recover from the continental United States – anywhere, anytime."
RAF Fairford serves as a crucial European hub for American heavy strategic bombers, having supported various U.S. military operations, including previous missions directed at Iranian sites.
Investigation into the Alleged Plot
Last Sunday, British authorities reported the discovery of three suspicious vehicles containing fuel accelerants in the vicinity of RAF Fairford.
Officials noted, "We can confirm that no improvised explosive devices were found. However, a quantity of petrol was recovered."
Investigators initiated inquiries into potential connections with Iranian state-backed groups. Subsequently, a British-Iranian dual national was apprehended "on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts."
Secretary of State Marco Rubio later commented that the suspected scheme "clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor."
President Donald Trump also informed reporters last week that the incident might be linked to Iran, a nation he characterized as being "at war with" the United States "since February."
In total, six individuals were arrested in connection with the event, including five British nationals in their early twenties.
However, police have since announced that all suspects have been released on bail, with the investigation continuing. Officials addressed the release of the five British nationals, explaining, "I understand why this development will have come as a surprise to many, but I’d like to reiterate that it was an investigative decision, and one which is grounded in experience and careful consideration of policing powers."
