Convicted Rapist Sentenced to Decades in Prison After Courthouse Escape Attempt, Amid Rising Campus Safety Concerns

A former student from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) has been sentenced to at least three decades in state prison after being convicted of raping and sexually assaulting multiple women. This marks the culmination of a multi-year legal process that brought to light troubling accusations of sexual violence at an institution frequently recognized as a prominent party school in the United States.

Arian Eteghaei, 24, received a sentence of 30 years to life in a California state correctional facility. A jury had previously found him guilty of forcible rape and forcible sexual penetration. However, before his formal sentencing, authorities reported that Eteghaei attempted a daring escape, fleeing from courthouse custody shortly after his conviction was delivered.

Eteghaei's sentencing occurs at a time when sexual violence at UC Santa Barbara is under heightened examination. The university has been consistently ranked as the nation's premier party school by Niche for the last two consecutive years.

The details of Eteghaei's case further intensify these concerns. In addition to the sexual assault charges, he was also convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence. Jurors also affirmed a special allegation, indicating that the sexual offenses were perpetrated against more than one victim.

“This case would not have been possible without the extraordinary courage of the victims who came forward and participated in a long and difficult legal process,” stated Santa Barbara County District Attorney John T. Savrnoch. “Their strength and willingness to testify allowed the truth to be heard and ultimately allowed the defendant to be held accountable for the serious harm he caused.”

According to official reports, Eteghaei forcibly escaped from custody on January 16, the very day the jury announced its verdict.

This alleged escape resulted in an additional felony charge for Eteghaei; prosecutors filed one count of escape by force against him in March.

The prosecution related to Eteghaei's sexual assault charges spanned several years, focusing on offenses committed during his enrollment as a student at UC Santa Barbara.

“This case required years of persistence, careful investigation, and tremendous support for the victims,” Savrnoch remarked. “The collective work of this team exemplifies the commitment of law enforcement, prosecutors, investigators, and victim advocates to seeking justice for survivors of sexual violence.”

Heightened Concerns Over Campus Safety

Beyond Eteghaei’s case, the UC Santa Barbara campus has seen other significant safety incidents. In June, university police issued a campus-wide Timely Warning after a female student reported being stalked and groped during daylight hours near Tierra De Fortuna Park.

According to police accounts, the woman was walking on a paved access road on UCSB's West Campus at approximately 11:30 a.m. on June 24. A man on a bicycle reportedly passed her, then circled back repeatedly over a 15-minute period.

Investigators noted that during the initial two interactions, the man paused to engage her with questions. However, on his third pass, he reportedly approached the woman from behind, sexually assaulted her, and then fled in the direction of Tierra De Fortuna Park.

This June incident represented the second Timely Warning released by UCSB police within a span of less than two months.

In May, an 18-year-old freshman student reported that she was raped and strangled. The assault allegedly occurred after she met a man at a fraternity party and subsequently returned to her residence at Tropicana Gardens in Isla Vista.

Following the May attack, the survivor's family, represented by attorney Tyrone Maho, publicly urged anyone with information to come forward. They emphasized that individuals who attended the fraternity party or were in the vicinity of Tropicana Gardens on the night of May 9 might possess crucial details.

The family also implored the university's chancellor to request that the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office assume control of the investigation. They contended that the assailant, who remained unidentified, posed “a potential threat to our community,” while simultaneously acknowledging and appreciating the efforts already made by the UC Santa Barbara police department.

This particular assault led to a candlelight vigil where students convened to show solidarity with the survivor and to voice their anxieties regarding campus safety protocols.

UC Santa Barbara has received the designation of the nation's top party school from Niche for the last two consecutive years.

Additionally, recent reports indicate an uptick in other reported crimes on campus, such as arrests related to weapons and instances of burglaries.

The university's police department affirmed its ongoing direct communication with the survivor's family and its collaborative efforts with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office as deemed necessary.
