Trump Labels Likely DC Mayor Janeese Lewis George a 'Communist,' Pledges to Counter Her Agenda

Former President Donald Trump recently characterized Washington, D.C., council member Janeese Lewis George, the leading candidate for mayor, as a "communist" and committed to blocking policies he believes would compromise public safety and reverse his administration's achievements in reducing crime within the nation's capital.

President Trump's Stance on D.C. Governance

In a detailed statement shared on Truth Social, Trump indicated his intention to meet with Lewis George while asserting that Washington had become safer during his presidency. He also promised to resist any agenda he claimed would weaken immigration enforcement, policing efforts, or the city's criminal justice framework.

"Janeese Lewis George, the Communist who is almost certainly going to be elected Mayor of Washington, D.C., has stated that she wants to empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back into our beloved Capital, resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying ‘things,’" the president wrote on Truth Social.

"Ultimately, it will never succeed, nor will I allow it to have a chance, because I have worked too diligently to make Washington, D.C., the Envy of the World, with virtually No Crime, and a Beautification process that has been unparalleled," Trump continued. "I will meet with Janeese Lewis George, but I must forewarn everyone that Washington, D.C., is once again a Safe and Prestigious Community. Many individuals, including myself, have worked extensively to achieve this, and we will not permit it to be dismantled by a Communist adherent who has no intention to, MAKE WASHINGTON GREAT AGAIN!"

Lewis George's Political Platform and Primary Victory

Lewis George, who identifies as a Democratic socialist and serves on the District of Columbia Council, secured victory earlier this month in the Democratic mayoral primary. She triumphed over Kenyan McDuffie and five other contenders, positioning her to succeed current Mayor Muriel Bowser in a city where Democratic candidates typically dominate general elections.

Her primary win foreshadows a likely confrontation with Trump, who has prioritized reducing crime in Washington and reshaping the capital during his potential second term. The former president has maintained a National Guard presence in the city and has repeatedly threatened to revoke the District's home rule if he perceives local leaders are failing to control crime.

Lewis George has been an outspoken critic of Trump's deployment of the National Guard and the increased federal law enforcement presence in Washington. Following his decision to deploy the Guard last year, she characterized the action as "a direct attack" on the city's residents and accused him of misusing the Home Rule Act.

Throughout her mayoral campaign, Lewis George contended that "federal troops" and "masked ICE agents" posed a greater danger to young Washingtonians than juvenile crime. She opposed reliance on curfews and federal enforcement, instead advocating for expanded youth programs and other community-based investments.

Threats of Federal Intervention

Trump has previously hinted at the possibility of increasing federal oversight in Washington should Lewis George become mayor.

Earlier this month, he told reporters, "I wouldn’t like it — and maybe we take back Washington, run it on the federal basis. We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses."
