Tate McRae Responds to Political Speculation Following Morgan Wallen Collaboration and Jack Hughes Controversy
The pop star clarified her stance on public perception and discussed the challenges of maintaining privacy amid her burgeoning career.

Tate McRae has recently addressed public speculation about her political leanings, which intensified after her musical partnership with country artist Morgan Wallen.
The 23-year-old artist joined forces with Wallen last year for the track "What I Want." This song, featured as the fifth single from his album "I'm the Problem," quickly ascended to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, marking McRae's inaugural number-one hit.
Further fueling the political conjecture was her rumored relationship with NHL star Jack Hughes. This connection came under scrutiny after Hughes was observed laughing alongside his teammates at a joke made by President Trump during a congratulatory phone call to the U.S. men's Olympic hockey team following their victory.
Navigating Public Perception and Political Associations
When questioned by Variety about the importance of navigating such public discussions, McRae stated that she prefers to let her actions communicate her stance rather than explicit words.
I like to say my piece through organizations I support and the environment that I have on tour,
she explained. The publication noted that McRae had previously promoted a "Little Miss Possessive" sweatshirt on TikTok, with proceeds benefiting the Global Fund for Women and The Trevor Project, a nonprofit dedicated to suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth. She added,
I think it’s pretty obvious what kind of person I am and the things I support. And I hope that my fans can see that through the things that I’m putting my energy towards.
Prioritizing Privacy in Personal Relationships
Similar to her approach to political affiliations, McRae maintains a strong commitment to privacy regarding her personal life, striving to avoid engaging with rumors.
During their celebration of an Olympic gold medal win last summer, the U.S. men's hockey team received a call from the president, facilitated by FBI Director Kash Patel, who was present at the time. Beyond extending an invitation to his State of the Union address, Trump sparked considerable online discussion with a particular remark: "I must tell you we're going to have to bring the women too; you do know that. Believe me, I probably would be impeached, okay?"
Hughes, credited with scoring the winning goal in the game, was among his teammates seen laughing during the call. This incident, coupled with the team's visit to the White House and attendance at the State of the Union, prompted several prominent media outlets to publish opinion pieces criticizing the team's reaction.
Regarding her personal connections, the singer emphasized,
I try to keep my relationships as sacred and private as possible. I love the people in my life. They love me. You just try to keep that circle as positive and supportive as possible.
She further commented on public scrutiny, stating,
And the outside noise, I can’t do anything about that. Focusing my energy on something that I can’t control, it just puts me in a bad mood.
Reflecting on the Emotional Demands of Stardom
After concluding her extensive 88-stop "Miss Possessive" tour, which generated over $100 million and solidified her status as a rising star, McRae reflected on the significant emotional impact of the experience.
I remember reading Sylvia Plath being like, 'I am her,'
she recalled.
My thoughts felt so dark at the time, and I felt so lonely. I really needed to come back into my body and regulate my nervous system.
She described the exhaustion:
I was so shot after the tour. I couldn’t really sleep at night. I’d seen so much of myself that I was like, 'I want to go into a black room and not look in a mirror for six months.'
McRae shared her process of self-affirmation:
And I think I really had to check myself and be like, 'You’re not the worst person in the world. You’re not the ugliest person in the world. You haven’t done everything wrong. And, you know, you’re just doing what you love.'
Future Endeavors and Artistic Evolution
Currently engaged in recording her fourth studio album, McRae recently graced the main stage at Lollapalooza. She is also slated to perform at Montreal's Osheaga Festival, marking her first festival appearance in her home country.
Discussing her long-term career aspirations, she articulated,
There’s always thought about how you want your legacy to go down. For me, the way to do that is try to beat your last performance, try to beat your last song, try to grow, evolve, pick it apart, rip it apart, figure out what didn’t work, what I didn’t like about that performance, what I could have done better, why I was nervous, figure out how to not be nervous.
She concluded,
I think the more you can master yourself and your performances, the better you get.
