Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff, has offered a candid account of her arduous journey battling breast cancer while fulfilling one of the most demanding positions in Washington. She disclosed that there were days when merely rising from bed and reporting to work consumed every ounce of her strength.

In a personal essay published on Sunday, Wiles detailed the experience of undergoing chemotherapy treatments while simultaneously leading the White House staff for President Donald Trump.

She noted that thoughts of her illness permeated her mind from the moment she awoke and, at times, even during sleep.

"Fighting cancer is brutal and unrelenting," Wiles wrote. Questions about treatment, test results and what might come next could overtake even a strong mind. At times, she acknowledged, they overtook hers.

According to Wiles, some days were dedicated entirely to confronting the disease. On other occasions, the simple acts of getting out of bed, dressing, and going to her job presented their own significant challenges. "Most days, I carried the full weight of both," she reflected.

Despite the immense personal strain, Wiles found that her work provided a crucial sense of purpose, extending beyond the endless cycle of appointments, scans, and treatment side effects. "Cancer can make your world very small," she wrote. Following successful surgery, pathology reports confirmed the absence of any remaining cancer cells, Wiles shared. In a social media post on Sunday, Wiles indicated that she rarely discusses personal matters but felt compelled to share her journey of battling cancer while continuing a job she deeply values. Wiles publicly announced on September 16 that she was cancer-free, following clear pathology results from an appointment at the Mayo Clinic. Her early-stage breast cancer diagnosis had been disclosed in March.

During her treatment, President Trump offered words of encouragement, stating in a prerecorded tribute in May that she was prevailing in her fight against cancer. Wiles expressed gratitude for his compassion and kindness, attributing her resilience to the support of her family, friends, colleagues, and medical professionals.
