San Jose Parents Charged After 8-Year-Old Dies in Allegedly Squalid, Infested Home

An 8-year-old girl in California succumbed to a severe asthma attack after allegedly residing for years in a home plagued by cockroaches, mold, and pet waste. This tragic event has led to felony child neglect charges against her mother and stepfather, according to prosecutors.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office announced this week that the girl's mother, Gabrielle Hanson, 32, and her stepfather, Jacob Randolph, 39, were reportedly aware of the hazardous conditions within their San Jose residence. They had also received repeated warnings from medical personnel and social workers regarding the dangers posed to their seven children.

Despite these explicit warnings, the couple is accused of waiting eight hours before seeking medical assistance when their daughter, Aurora Williams, began experiencing significant medical distress in May.

"It was too late," prosecutors stated in a press release announcing the charges.

Allegations of Neglect and Unsanitary Conditions

Over a year before her death, in February 2025, Aurora was taken to an emergency room by a relative due to asthma symptoms, including wheezing and difficulty breathing, prosecutors noted. During this visit, a bug reportedly fell from her shoe, and a cockroach was observed crawling on her. Aurora then told staff, "Oh yeah, bugs just crawl on me."

Hospital personnel also reported that Aurora had a strong odor of cat urine, appeared severely underweight and pale, and mentioned that she was hungry and had not eaten.

On May 13, 2026, San Jose police and firefighters responded to the family's home following a call about a child experiencing a medical emergency.

Subsequently, six other children, whose ages ranged from 2 months to 17 years, were placed into protective custody by social workers.

Aurora was pronounced deceased four days later, according to information from prosecutors.

Investigation Uncovers Deplorable Environment

The medical examiner concluded that Aurora's death resulted from a lack of oxygen to the brain, brought on by severe asthma and an acute lung injury linked to a viral infection. Medical neglect was identified as a significant contributing factor, leading to her death being classified as a homicide.

Investigators determined that Aurora and her siblings had been living in "squalid and dangerous conditions" for at least four years, dating back to 2019, prosecutors stated.

Detectives also discovered that Aurora's asthma equipment had not been properly maintained. Her prescribed inhaler was reportedly missing during two searches of the home.

Further investigation revealed a dirty inhaler spacer that was missing a rubber seal, which is designed to prevent medication leakage, alongside a respiratory mask containing cockroaches.

"Another child is needlessly dead in this county, and once again our prosecutors will do everything in our legal power to hold the people who did this responsible," District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement. "Prosecuting people after this kind of tragedy is necessary – and not enough. There are serious questions about how this child and her siblings lived in this dangerous squalor for so long. In the name of this lost child and the others, this community deserves honest answers and real changes."

Additional Charges and Court Proceedings

The investigation also led to child sexual abuse charges against Aurora's maternal uncle, Jonathan Hanson, 44, involving another child residing in the home.

Prosecutors charged Jonathan Hanson with two counts of molestation and one count of possessing explicit videos of the alleged victim, who was between 11 and 15 years old at the time of the alleged offenses.

Gabrielle Hanson, the alleged victim's stepmother, also faces a charge of knowing about the alleged abuse and failing to intervene, prosecutors added.

All three defendants were arraigned on Tuesday.

Gabrielle Hanson and Randolph were released on supervised own recognizance, despite objections from prosecutors, while Jonathan Hanson was ordered to be held without bail.

Their next court appearance is scheduled for November 20 at the Hall of Justice in San Jose.
