Colorado Rockies Rookie Benched After Inappropriate Gesture Towards Braves Fans

Colorado Rockies rookie center fielder Cole Carrigg faced disciplinary action after he was observed making an offensive gesture toward Atlanta Braves fans during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Truist Park.

The incident occurred when the Rockies held a narrow 1-0 advantage. Carrigg attempted a diving catch on a fly ball hit by Michael Harris II, but the effort was unsuccessful. The ball resulted in a two-run double, shifting the lead to Atlanta. Following this pivotal play, as the home crowd voiced their reactions, Carrigg directed an inappropriate hand gesture toward the stands.

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer publicly addressed the situation, condemning the action and announcing that Carrigg would be excluded from the starting lineup for several days. Schaeffer stated,

"Cole made a mistake, and he knows that is an embarrassment to the organization and that we don't stand for that. Listen, everybody makes mistakes. It is just one that he has to learn from. It is just that we will not put up with that here."

Player Addresses Incident and Returns to Action

Although he was not in Sunday's initial lineup, Carrigg did participate in the series finale, entering as a pinch hitter. During his appearance, he recorded no hits in two at-bats, including a strikeout. He subsequently stayed in the game, playing both center field and shortstop.

Carrigg later took responsibility for his actions, expressing regret. He stated,

"First, I apologize to my teammates and the organization, that's not how I want to represent us. That's inexcusable on my part."

He further elaborated on his intensity for the game, saying,

"With that being said, I'm somebody who's going to play at 110 percent every game and give my all to this team and to the game to try to win ballgames. That was a play that I felt could or could not have won the game, so I'm very passionate about that."

Acknowledging the enthusiasm of the opposing supporters, he added,

"Braves fans are pretty passionate themselves. Kudos to them. But that gesture can't happen."

While such conduct typically results in immediate consequences, Carrigg's candid admission and evident passion for the sport offer a contrast to more generic responses often heard from athletes. The expectation is that he will learn from the experience and move forward.
