The Los Angeles Rams' defensive unit will face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday significantly depleted, missing two key figures who were expected to bolster the team's front line this season.
Key Defensive Players Sidelined
Myles Garrett, a notable offseason acquisition, remains on injured reserve following an injury sustained during Week 1 in Australia. Adding to the defensive challenges, Aaron Donald, who came out of retirement in late August to rejoin the Rams, will also be unavailable for Sunday's contest. Donald's absence for the season opener was previously attributed to his ongoing ramp-up process, as he had not yet reached a sufficient level of conditioning to travel with the team.
Donald's latest setback stems from what the team has described as back issues. Head Coach Sean McVay confirmed that Donald "felt some soreness" after the team's recent loss to the Denver Broncos.
Coach McVay on Donald's Health and Protection
"I think our job as coaches is [to] put our players in positions to have successful outcomes," McVay stated. "He's as tough as it gets, just not feeling good enough. And I think it would be irresponsible on my part — and obviously talking with [team doctor] Reggie [Scott] — to ask him. He would do it and he could probably go be productive, but part of our job is to protect these tough dudes like him from themselves."
McVay emphasized the organization's duty to safeguard Donald's health, irrespective of the player's strong desire to compete.
"He's working as hard as he can to get himself feeling as good as possible. And we're hopeful and optimistic that good days are ahead," McVay added, expressing optimism for Donald's recovery.
Puka Nacua Returns to Offense
On a more positive note for the Rams, wide receiver Puka Nacua is slated to make his return to the field on Sunday. Nacua had been out for the past two games while recovering from a hip injury.
Coach McVay reported that Nacua "looked sharp" during practices throughout the week, particularly excelling in the more physically demanding segments of the sessions. Nacua made a strong impression in Week 1, recording five receptions for 74 yards.
The Rams, who were considered pre-season favorites for the Super Bowl, currently hold a 1-2 record as they head into Week 4.
