Paris Deputy Mayor Audrey Pulvar issued a comprehensive statement last week, directly attributing the severe and lethal heatwave that swept across France to the carbon emissions from the United States.
Addressing American journalists and social media figures, Pulvar conveyed her strong sentiments via Instagram on Friday. "Dear American journalists and social media 'influencers': for days, some of you have been criticizing and making fun of Paris because the city does not have A/C in every room. OMG, this is so rich!" she wrote.
She continued by emphasizing the significant role of the U.S. in global warming. "As the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, you bear a significant amount of responsibility for global warming and the consequences we, in France, are experiencing. Your cities '90% air-conditioned' are not unrelated to this. In Paris, we take responsibility."
Paris's Environmental Stance and Criticism of U.S. Practices
Pulvar, who assumed her elected position in March, elaborated on Paris's ongoing efforts to combat air pollution and implement energy-efficient renovations throughout the city. She contended that air conditioning systems actively "contributes and aggravates the problem" of global warming.
"If every American city made the same ecological transition efforts as Paris and many European cities, believe me, the whole world would be better off. So please, enough with the lecture. Just start doing your part. Best regards," she concluded her initial post.
In a subsequent addition to her statement, Pulvar further defended the initiatives undertaken by the left-leaning administration in Paris to address climate change.
"If we hadn’t done so, the situation today would be much worse. Yes, there is still much to be done. No, the situation is not ideal. But perhaps it would be more appropriate for one of the countries most responsible for the problem not to lecture those who are trying to find solutions for their own populations," Pulvar asserted.
Impact of the Heatwave on France
During the week, Paris experienced unprecedented heat, with temperatures soaring above 104 degrees Fahrenheit, according to reports. Tragically, at least 48 individuals in France lost their lives through drowning while attempting to cool off in unauthorized swimming locations.
In response to the extreme heat, French authorities implemented several measures, including restrictions on alcohol consumption in public areas and limitations on large public gatherings. The nation also mobilized thousands of emergency personnel to assist during the crisis.
To safeguard tourists and staff, Paris reduced the operating hours at many of its renowned landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum.
