Falcons' Michael Penix Jr. Cleared for Sunday Game Amid Caleb Williams' Uncertain Status
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has been cleared to play against the Chicago Bears this Sunday, while Bears QB Caleb Williams' availability remains in question due to a hamstring injury.

Michael Penix Jr., quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, has been medically cleared to start in the upcoming Sunday matchup against the Chicago Bears, following concerns over a rib injury. In contrast, the availability of Bears' star signal-caller Caleb Williams for the same game remains uncertain as he continues to recover from a hamstring issue.
Penix Jr. made his anticipated 2026 season debut in Week 3, contributing to Atlanta's initial victory of the year. The team secured another win in Week 4, where Penix Jr. passed for 223 yards and running back Bijan Robinson amassed 145 rushing yards in a decisive performance against the New Orleans Saints.
Penix Jr.'s Recent Injury and Return
A recent scare occurred in Atlanta's Week 6 game against the Baltimore Ravens when a sack briefly forced Penix Jr. off the field. He returned for one play but was unable to participate in overtime due to rib discomfort, prompting speculation about a potential new setback.
Following an MRI conducted earlier this week, Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski announced on Wednesday that Penix Jr. was on schedule to start on Sunday, provided no further issues arose. By Friday, Penix Jr. had no injury designation and was fully cleared to take the field as the starting quarterback for the weekend's contest.
Penix Jr. has participated in all practices throughout the week. Coach Stefanski also indicated that he does not anticipate his quarterback needing any additional rib protection for Sunday's game, nor does he foresee any necessary adjustments to the team's game plan for the Bears matchup.
The first-year head coach noted Penix Jr.'s significant impact during Weeks 3 and 4, when the Falcons achieved a league-leading combined score of 80 points.
Penix Jr.'s injury history, which extends back to his collegiate career, is well-documented. His most recent ACL injury occurred last November, necessitating surgery. This season, he has accumulated 719 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Caleb Williams' Hamstring Uncertainty
The outlook for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams concerning Sunday's game in Atlanta is considerably less clear compared to Penix Jr.'s situation. Williams has been sidelined for the past three games due to a hamstring injury.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson stated on Wednesday that Williams would be listed as a full participant on the team's most recent injury report. This status was maintained on Thursday, with Williams again listed as a full participant for a second consecutive day.
However, Williams himself emphasized that a final decision regarding his availability for Chicago's Week 6 game against Atlanta had not yet been made.
"Before you start asking, do not know if I’m playing yet," Williams conveyed to reporters. "Have to go through a bunch of medical protocols, obviously have to get out there and practice, do the stress testing that you do when you’re trying to come back from injury or serious injury."
Williams also expressed disagreement with how reports had characterized his injury. He asserted that "every single" report published was inaccurate, clarifying that he had sustained a "pretty serious" hamstring tear.
"There’s nothing that has come out that has been right about what it is and what it has been," Williams commented.
