The Red Bull Ring, home to the Austrian Grand Prix, holds special significance for Red Bull Racing and its star driver, Max Verstappen. However, the initial stages of this year's race weekend proved challenging for the Dutch champion after a substantial incident during the qualifying session.
This dramatic crash not only impacted Verstappen's own performance but also ignited a dispute that ultimately saw Mercedes' George Russell clinch pole position for Sunday's main event.
Verstappen's Qualifying Incident
Verstappen had successfully navigated his way into Q3, the final segment of qualifying, following a bold strategic call. This placed him in a strong position to contend for a top starting spot in the upcoming race. During his critical final flying lap, as he pushed the limits of his car, Verstappen encountered trouble at Turn 9. This corner, the circuit's penultimate bend, is a high-speed right-hander.
The four-time world champion lost control of the car's rear, veering off the track and skidding through the gravel before making heavy impact with the protective barrier.
Following the incident, Verstappen noted that the car had felt unstable on that particular lap. Intriguingly, his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, communicated a potential “delay on the rear wing.” This remark suggests that the team's movable rear wing may not have closed as intended, potentially leaving Verstappen with insufficient downforce to safely navigate the corner at speed.
Controversial End to Qualifying
While Verstappen's crash was a spectacle in itself, it also triggered a chain of events that intensified the qualifying drama. At the time of the incident, Ferrari and Mercedes were locked in a fierce contest for pole, with Charles Leclerc of Ferrari holding a provisional pole position.
Verstappen's collision in the final two corners of the circuit prompted the deployment of yellow flags. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli misidentified these as double-waved yellow flags and consequently aborted his fast lap.
In contrast, his teammate George Russell, who appeared to be on an exceptional lap, recognized that only a single yellow flag was being displayed. He proceeded to lift off the throttle as required through the affected sector, yet still managed to record a lap time quick enough to secure pole position.
The outcome led to protests from several drivers, including Antonelli, who raised concerns about Russell's ability to improve his time under yellow flag conditions. However, after reviewing the situation, the race stewards opted against an investigation, thereby upholding the qualifying results.
As a result, George Russell is set to commence the Grand Prix from pole position, with Charles Leclerc starting alongside him in second. Lewis Hamilton will occupy third place on the grid, with Kimi Antonelli in fourth. Despite his crash, Max Verstappen's earlier lap in Q3 was sufficiently fast to secure him a fifth-place start, pending any potential grid penalties that might arise from necessary component replacements on his damaged vehicle.
