Man with Prior Murder Conviction Accused of Operating Major Drug Ring Near Texas Schools

Authorities in Texas have apprehended a man with a previous murder conviction, alleging he operated an extensive drug network from a residence situated close to multiple educational institutions. Surveillance reportedly captured what appeared to be minors acquiring narcotics, including fentanyl pills designed to resemble ecstasy.

The Galveston County Organized Crime Task Force initiated a two-month investigation that culminated in an August 18 raid on a home in the 1200 block of Appomattox Drive in Texas City. The Galveston County Sheriff's Office SWAT team executed the tactical entry.

Jahml McDonald, 50, of Texas City, identified as the primary target of the investigation, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with two felony controlled-substance offenses, as confirmed by the sheriff's office.

Extensive Drug Cache Discovered

During the operation, detectives seized a substantial quantity of illicit substances. Their findings included approximately one kilogram of fentanyl pills, alongside THC wax, marijuana, THC vapes, promethazine, and dozens of bottles of liquor.

The sheriff's office highlighted a concerning aspect of the seizure: the fentanyl pills were deliberately crafted to mimic the appearance of ecstasy or MDMA, featuring bright colors typically associated with recreational party drugs. This disguise made them particularly deceptive.

Operation Near Schools Raises Alarm

Task force surveillance documented observations of individuals who appeared to be teenagers purchasing illicit substances from the property. This location is strategically positioned near Giles Middle School, the College of the Mainland, and two neighborhood elementary schools, raising significant community concern.

Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli described the alleged enterprise as highly sophisticated.

"This is a full-service drug operation, including the ability to pay with credit card," Chief Balli stated. "This is a convenience store for poison that was taken down."

Galveston County District Attorney Kenneth Cusick emphasized the serious nature of the case, noting McDonald's extensive criminal background. Cusick confirmed that McDonald had previously served 25 years for a murder conviction and was out on bond for a pending marijuana case at the time of his recent arrest.

Cusick pledged to pursue the most stringent prosecution possible.

"This offender needs the full attention of my office," Cusick asserted. "This person has a criminal history, a murder conviction, drug convictions and [is] now peddling these type of substances on a house near a college, a community college, two elementary schools within walking distance. This is outrageous."

Community Concerns and Legal Proceedings

Residents living in the vicinity of the Appomattox Drive home had reportedly observed a consistent pattern of heavy vehicle and foot traffic around the residence.

A neighbor, Donald Moore, recounted observing the activity.

"Every time I came by, there was traffic, traffic, traffic," Moore stated. "Teenagers jumping out, running to the house. ... I know eventually, with all of this traffic and with all the drugs being dealt, the next thing is gonna happen is gunfire. Somebody's gonna get hurt or killed."

A judge has upheld a combined $2 million bond for McDonald, with $1 million set for each of the two charges he faces.
