Long Island Street Takeover Leads to 15 Arrests, Multiple Vehicle Impoundments

Authorities on Long Island apprehended fifteen individuals and impounded seven vehicles following an alleged street takeover incident early Saturday morning. The event involved reckless driving, tire burnouts, and "donuts" that brought traffic to a halt on a Suffolk County roadway.

The Suffolk County Police Department's Street Takeover Task Force had utilized intelligence gathering and social media monitoring to become aware of the planned gathering ahead of Friday night, August 14. Investigators learned that the group intended to stage a takeover somewhere within Suffolk County, an expansive area covering approximately 1,000 square miles across the eastern two-thirds of Long Island.

Law Enforcement Response and Interception

Throughout the night, law enforcement officials closely monitored the group as it relocated between various sites. Officers initially dispersed attempted gatherings near Commack Road and Sunrise Highway in Islip, then later broke up another assembly near Route 112 and Main Street in Patchogue.

Police ultimately intercepted the large crowd around 12:50 a.m. on Saturday near the intersection of Woodside Avenue and Sawgrass Drive in Medford. At this location, authorities reported that a significant number of vehicles had effectively blocked the roadway.

Numerous vehicles effectively closed down the roadway on Sawgrass Drive by driving recklessly, performing stunts in the roadway, and doing donuts and burnouts, police stated.

Members of the dedicated Street Takeover Task Force responded to the scene, leading to the apprehension of 15 individuals, the seizure of seven vehicles, and the issuance of multiple traffic citations. Those arrested hailed from various communities across both Long Island and New York City. Of the fifteen suspects, fourteen were charged with two offenses: participating in an unlawful speed contest and spectating an unlawful speed contest.

Previous Incidents Highlight Ongoing Challenge

This recent enforcement action comes merely weeks after another substantial street takeover event occurred within Suffolk County. During that previous incident, police reported that over 200 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), dirt bikes, and motorcycles inundated roads in Hauppauge and Brentwood, necessitating a major law enforcement response.

That operation resulted in three arrests and the impoundment of ten vehicles, according to the Suffolk County Police.
