Harry Kane's Late Brace Propels England to World Cup Round of 16 After Dramatic Comeback
England's captain, Harry Kane, scored two crucial late goals to overturn a deficit against a resilient DR Congo, securing a 2-1 victory and a spot in the World Cup Round of 16.

England found themselves teetering on the brink of an unexpected early exit from the World Cup, trailing for much of their crucial match against DR Congo. However, the team's talisman, Harry Kane, delivered a remarkable performance, scoring both of England's goals within the final 21 minutes to clinch a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory and secure their place in the Round of 16.
Dramatic Turnaround Secures Progression
The match began with an early shock for the English squad when Brian Cipenga put DR Congo ahead in just the seventh minute. The Congolese defense maintained their surprising lead, holding off England's attacks through the first half and into the second, even past the hydration break.
The breakthrough for England finally came in the 75th minute. England's all-time leading scorer, Kane, leveled the score with a powerful header from an Anthony Gordon cross, despite goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi getting a hand to the ball. Just eleven minutes later, Kane struck again, weaving past defenders before unleashing a right-footed shot that nestled perfectly into the top-right corner of the net, sealing the decisive goal.
Kane's Record-Breaking Performance
These two goals marked Kane's 83rd and 84th for his national team in his 118th appearance, further extending his record as England's top scorer. His World Cup tally now stands at 13 goals in 16 matches, surpassing the legendary Pelé's 12 goals. In the current tournament alone, Kane has been prolific, finding the back of the net five times in four games.
"It was just about pounding the rock, keep pounding the rock and our moment would come," Kane reflected after the match. "We spoke about people having hero moments. It can be anyone in the team … Whoever it is, we have hero moments, and for me it was the day."
This victory was particularly significant for England, as they had only managed to win one previous World Cup fixture after initially conceding the first goal. That sole instance was the historic 1966 final against West Germany at Wembley Stadium.
DR Congo, entering the match as significant 12-1 underdogs, put up a formidable fight against an English side that has consistently reached at least the Round of 16 in six of the last seven World Cups. England's recent tournament history includes a quarter-final exit in Qatar and a fourth-place finish in Russia in 2018.
Looking Ahead to the Knockout Stage
England now faces a challenging encounter in the next stage, preparing to take on Mexico on their home ground in Mexico City this Sunday. Looking further ahead, there is a potential for a marquee matchup against the United States in the July 19 final, slated to be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, though such an outcome would require many factors to align perfectly for both teams.
