Prosecutors in Florida are pursuing the death penalty against an individual accused of murder, who allegedly re-entered the United States without authorization following a prior deportation and subsequently fled to a sanctuary jurisdiction after the fatal incident.
Shahidul Islam, a 44-year-old national of Bangladesh, was formally indicted on Wednesday by a grand jury in Lake County, Florida. He faces a charge of premeditated first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of his sister-in-law, Monica Islam, which occurred on May 2, 2025.
Details of the Alleged Crime and Investigation
Hours after Monica Islam was reported missing on May 2, her body was discovered on the side of a road with a gunshot wound to the head, according to State Attorney Bill Gladson of the Fifth Judicial Circuit. She had last been seen walking towards Shahidul Islam's vehicle.
Authorities revealed that Islam conducted numerous "suspicious" online searches on the morning of the killing. A subsequent search warrant executed on Shahidul Islam's car uncovered bloodstains matching Monica Islam's DNA. Investigators also found a bullet lodged in the passenger door and a shattered passenger window within the vehicle.
Following the alleged killing, Shahidul Islam reportedly rented a vehicle and traveled to New York City. He was later located through a collaborative effort involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
After being prosecuted and sentenced for his unauthorized entry into the U.S., Shahidul Islam was extradited back to Lake County. He is currently being held without bond at the Lake County Detention Facility.
Official Statements and Legal Pursuit
State Attorney Gladson's office announced on Wednesday its intention to seek the death penalty, citing the severe nature of the crime and its profound impact on the victim's family.
"No family should ever have to endure the pain of such a senseless and horrific act of violence as this one," Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia stated. "Shahidul Islam illegally entered our country after being deported, committed this heinous crime, and then fled to a sanctuary city." Ingoglia further asserted that Florida "will continue to stand firm against violent crime, sanctuary cities and illegal immigration," emphasizing that the state "will never apologize for putting the safety of law-abiding families first."
Gladson acknowledged that while "no prosecution can restore the life that was taken," his office is committed to "pursue justice on their behalf and hold this offender accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
