England Secures Third Place in High-Scoring Thriller Against France at 2026 FIFA World Cup
In an unforgettable contest marked by a stunning display of offense, England overcame France in the 2026 FIFA World Cup third-place playoff.

While typically not the fixture teams aspire to play, the third-place encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday presented significant motivations for both England and France.
Both European football powerhouses stepped onto the pitch at Miami Stadium, also recognized as Hard Rock Stadium, fresh from challenging semifinal defeats. France had fallen to Spain, while England was overcome by the reigning champions, Argentina.
France entered the contest seeking a measure of redemption, having been widely considered tournament favorites before their early exit. Furthermore, the match offered a pivotal chance for French superstar Kylian Mbappe to surpass Argentina's Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot award.
However, they faced an England squad that had demonstrated consistent strong form throughout the competition and held a 2-1 historical advantage over France in previous World Cup meetings. Notably, England's most prolific offensive talents this tournament, Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, were both initially named as substitutes.
England's Dominant First Half
Despite the absence of their usual attacking linchpins from the starting lineup, England wasted no time in asserting their offensive prowess. Just three minutes into the game, Declan Rice found the back of the net, opening the scoring for England.
Approximately ten minutes later, England appeared to double their lead, but the goal was ultimately disallowed due to an offside call. Nonetheless, England maintained significant attacking pressure, and Ezri Konsa extended their lead in the 18th minute, converting from a corner kick.
The relentless English attack continued. In the 37th minute, Bukayo Saka scored a goal that, while perhaps unconventionally executed, counted just the same. Saka then added another before the break, culminating in a remarkable 4-0 lead for England at halftime. This lopsided scoreline in the first half surprised many, especially given France's pedigree and England's key players still on the bench.
France Mounts a Spirited Comeback
Fortunately for France, they responded with renewed vigor in the second half, initiating a remarkable comeback. Mbappe brought France onto the scoreboard in the 48th minute, a goal that propelled him ahead of Messi in the Golden Boot standings and also drew him level with Messi's career World Cup goal tally of 21.
Mere minutes later, Bradley Barcola of France further narrowed the deficit, making the score 4-2.
The second half became a testament to French resilience, mirroring England's first-half dominance. In the 66th minute, Mbappe struck again, reducing England's lead to 4-3. This goal not only extended his lead in the Golden Boot race but also secured him the top position on the all-time World Cup goals list. The intensity of the match had dramatically shifted, transforming it into an instant classic.
A Historic Finish
Despite France's multiple attempts to equalize, England was awarded a penalty kick late in the game. Bukayo Saka stepped up and calmly converted it, completing his hat trick and providing England with crucial breathing room. Saka's pivotal performance was particularly notable, especially considering he did not feature in England's semifinal loss to Argentina.
France, however, refused to concede easily, continuing to press forward. Yet, England delivered a final decisive blow with a superb goal from Jude Bellingham, his seventh of the tournament, effectively sealing the victory.
The final score of 6-3 made this the highest-scoring third-place match in World Cup history, surpassing the previous record set in 1958 between France and West Germany.
While England ultimately fell short of bringing home the World Cup trophy, this achievement marked their best finish in the tournament since their triumph in 1966.
This extraordinary match concluded, leaving only one fixture remaining in the tournament: the World Cup final. Spain and Argentina are set to compete for the title on Sunday afternoon at New York-New Jersey Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 3 pm ET.
