Dodgers Secure Game 1 Victory Over Braves, Initiating Bid for Third Consecutive World Series Title
Los Angeles leveraged dominant pitching from Tarik Skubal and a powerful offensive display to clinch the opening game of the NLDS against Atlanta.

In the high-stakes environment of October baseball, superior starting pitching frequently dictates postseason outcomes. On Saturday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers showcased this principle, with two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal delivering a commanding performance against the Atlanta Braves.
Skubal was a force on the mound, recording seven strikeouts and surrendering just one run on two hits and two walks over six innings. His effort paved the way for the Dodgers' 5-3 triumph in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, marking their initial step in the pursuit of a third straight World Series title.
Dodgers Offense Ignites After Slow Start
The game began with Atlanta's Dylan Dodd effectively silencing the Dodgers' bats, allowing only two hits through three scoreless innings. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Braves manager Walt Weiss turned to reliever Victor Mederos in the fourth inning.
Mederos managed to get catcher Will Smith to fly out, but then issued a walk to star first baseman Freddie Freeman. With one out and a runner on first, Mederos threw a 92.3 mph cutter that left fielder Teoscar Hernández capitalized on. Hernández launched the pitch 431 feet into the left-field bleachers at an exit velocity of 109.9 mph, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. He paused to admire the impressive blast before emphatically tossing his bat towards the dugout.
Dodgers right fielder Kyle Tucker followed Hernández's home run with a bloop single to left field, prompting Weiss to remove Mederos from the game. A.J. Smith-Shawver entered to relieve Mederos and successfully retired the next two batters, stemming the immediate threat.
Skubal's Gem and Braves' Brief Rally
Meanwhile, Skubal was in a groove, retiring 15 consecutive batters after surrendering a leadoff single to All-Star designated hitter Drake Baldwin. His no-hit bid was eventually broken in the top of the sixth inning when catcher Sean Murphy connected with Skubal’s 1-2, 99 mph fastball, sending it 421 feet over the left-center-field wall for a solo home run. This cut the Dodgers' lead to 2-1.
Despite Murphy's leadoff homer, the Braves continued to threaten. Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim and second baseman Ozzie Albies drew walks with two outs, bringing first baseman Matt Olson to the plate with two runners on. However, Skubal skillfully navigated the jam, inducing a weak fly ball from the All-Star first baseman to left field, preserving the 2-1 lead.
Los Angeles Extends Lead with Back-to-Back Homers
The Dodgers quickly responded in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Hernández singled up the middle. Kyle Tucker then hammered Smith-Shawver's 97-mph fastball 408 feet over the right-field wall, extending Los Angeles' advantage to 4-1.
Just two batters later, third baseman Max Muncy joined the home run parade, crushing a solo shot off Smith-Shawver to push the score to 5-1. The Braves, whose bullpen was stretched thin after a demanding three-game Wild Card Series victory against the Philadelphia Phillies, had to keep Smith-Shawver in the game to conserve their remaining pitching resources.
Late-Game Drama and Final Out
In the top of the ninth inning, Atlanta attempted a comeback. Ronald Acuña Jr. drew a walk, and Ozzie Albies followed with a two-run home run off Tanner Scott, narrowing the deficit to 5-3. However, Scott managed to retire the subsequent two batters. Manager Dave Roberts then called on Evan Phillips to secure the final out of the contest.
Phillips walked Mauricio Dubón, bringing Austin Riley to the plate as the potential tying run. Nevertheless, Phillips induced a ground ball from the Braves third baseman to Betts, sealing the 5-3 victory for Los Angeles.
The Dodgers will aim to build on this Game 1 success when they face the Braves again on Sunday in Game 2 of the series.
