Cincinnati Reds center fielder Dane Myers was carted off the field Monday night in Milwaukee following a dramatic collision with the outfield wall. The incident occurred after Myers completed a spectacular catch against the Milwaukee Brewers, a play that could be considered a contender for "Catch of the Year."
Spectacular Play Ends in Injury
The play unfolded in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brewers veteran Andrew Vaughn hit a powerful drive to center field. Myers demonstrated exceptional athleticism, getting an excellent jump and tracking the ball as he sprinted towards the gap.
In a remarkable display, Myers reached up to make an acrobatic catch. However, his momentum carried him too close to the fence, and he lost his balance, colliding with the wall at high speed. Despite the forceful impact, Myers managed to maintain control of the ball, securing the out, though the collision clearly took a significant toll on him.
Immediately after the crash, Myers was seen writhing in pain on the warning track, bending over as his fellow outfielders rushed to his side. The Reds' training staff quickly sprinted onto the field to attend to him. Myers was observed clutching his right shoulder, even though the primary impact with the fence appeared to be head-on.
Trainers spent a considerable amount of time assessing Myers' condition, during which the crowd fell silent, anxiously hoping to see him walk off under his own power. Eventually, a medical cart arrived to transport him. With assistance, Myers was able to rise to his feet, drawing a round of applause from the Milwaukee crowd, acknowledging his self-sacrificing effort for his team. TJ Friedl subsequently entered the game to take Myers' place in center field.
Initial Medical Report and Team Reaction
Following the incident, Myers was transported to a local hospital in Milwaukee for comprehensive testing. In a positive development, initial X-rays came back negative, as confirmed by Reds manager Terry Francona after Cincinnati's 5-3 defeat to the Brewers. Francona did not elaborate on the specific nature of the ailment Myers might be experiencing.
Myers, a 30-year-old native of Columbus, Texas, is currently in his inaugural season with the Cincinnati Reds, primarily serving as a bench outfielder.
This season, he has participated in 63 games, posting a slash line of .256/.358/.385 and an OPS of .742. Across 117 at-bats, he has recorded three home runs and 14 runs batted in.
Prior to joining Cincinnati, Myers made his major league debut with the Miami Marlins in 2023, appearing in 22 games and batting .269 over 67 at-bats. He continued with the Marlins for the subsequent two seasons, with his most extensive MLB tenure occurring in 2025, during which he played 106 games, achieving a .235/.291/.326 slash line, six home runs, and 31 RBI with Miami.
Game Outcome
Unfortunately for the Reds, they were unable to secure a victory in Myers' honor. The National League Central contest saw the Brewers mount a comeback, ultimately breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-run home run from Joey Ortiz. Earlier in the game, Brice Turang, who had been a standout player for Team USA during the World Baseball Classic, hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to even the score. At the time of Myers' injury, the Reds held a 1-0 lead.
