NHL Star Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck Publicly Confirms Trade Request from Winnipeg Jets
After weeks of speculation, the veteran netminder stated his desire to move on, prompting a response from the team's general manager.

Connor Hellebuyck, the acclaimed goaltender for Team USA and a cornerstone of the Winnipeg Jets, has officially confirmed recent speculation regarding his request for a trade from the NHL franchise. The 33-year-old Michigan native, who has dedicated his entire professional career to the Jets, is a three-time recipient of the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the league's top netminder.
The confirmation follows a season where the Jets experienced a downturn in performance. Earlier in the week, Kevin Cheveldayoff, the Jets' executive vice president and general manager, indicated that the organization was open to discussing potential offers for the highly sought-after goaltender.
Cheveldayoff was quoted stating, "Certainly, as an organization we're going to listen." He also referenced Hellebuyck's candid remarks at his end-of-season press conference and "frank conversations" held during exit meetings, while maintaining that the specifics of those private discussions would remain confidential.
Hellebuyck's Public Confirmation
On Thursday, Hellebuyck himself addressed the situation, confirming his desire to leave the team. In a statement released through his agent, Hellebuyck explained:
I have tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options. With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request. My position has not changed. I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.
Since making his debut with the Jets during the 2015-16 season, Hellebuyck has consistently ranked among the NHL's elite goaltenders, solidifying his role as a pivotal figure for the franchise.
Team Response and Recent Achievements
Following Hellebuyck's public statement, General Manager Cheveldayoff issued a response on behalf of the team. The statement acknowledged:
Connor has been open with us about his desire for a change. He has been an important part of the Winnipeg Jets organization for many years, and we have tremendous respect for what he has accomplished here. While we will continue to work through the situation in a thoughtful manner, there is no update at this time.
Beyond his NHL accomplishments, Hellebuyck recently played a crucial role in securing an Olympic gold medal for Team USA. His exceptional 41-save performance in the championship game against Canada at the 2025 Milan Olympics was instrumental in the U.S. men's team achieving gold for the first time since the iconic 'Miracle on Ice' victory in 1980.
This monumental achievement also led to an announcement earlier this year by President Trump during the State of the Union address, indicating that Hellebuyck would be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
