Commanders' Overtime Blunder Results in Controversial Tie Against Giants
Washington's Week 5 matchup against the New York Giants ended in a widely criticized tie after a series of late-game errors prevented a potential winning field goal.

The Washington Commanders concluded their Sunday game without a loss, yet the manner in which their contest unfolded has sparked significant criticism, potentially impacting the perception of the coaching staff and the team's quarterback.
For many supporters, the team's performance against the New York Giants in Week 5 was deeply disappointing, transforming a probable victory into an unexpected tie through a sequence of late-game missteps.
The Critical Overtime Sequence
After squandering a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Commanders found themselves in overtime, positioned at the Giants' 26-yard line with 55 seconds remaining. At this point, a field goal attempt seemed the most straightforward path to securing a win.
However, instead of preparing for a kick, the team opted for a run play. Subsequently, with 22 seconds left, they lined up for what appeared to be a pass attempt. Crucially, the team had no timeouts remaining, a fact that quarterback Jayden Daniels seemingly did not realize.
Daniels scrambled for two yards, but rather than throwing the ball out of bounds to stop the clock, he was tackled. With only seven seconds left after he went down, Daniels remained on the ground for a moment or two, appearing to await further instructions, rather than quickly spiking the ball.
The Commanders were ultimately unable to line up and spike the ball before time expired, negating any chance for the field goal attempt they could have made nearly a minute earlier. The game ended in a tie.
"I'm gutted for our team," Coach Dan Quinn told reporters after the game, expressing his profound disappointment.
Coach and Quarterback Address the Blunder
Quinn reiterated his feelings, stating, "Leaving tonight with a tie feels like a loss. And the last sequence, we throw it out of bounds, we clock it, you give yourself a chance to kick it. And we pride ourselves on those moments at the end of the game."
He continued, acknowledging the miscalculation: "And after the first down run, still trying to gain more for the kick. The right call is, honestly, like we can go clock it early and don't put ourselves in that spot and that is my responsibility. Nobody else's. I'm gutted for our team."
Following the game, Quinn appeared visibly distressed, standing alone at the 25-yard line, seemingly lost in thought.
It remained unclear whether the coaching staff was fully aware of the timeout situation themselves, or if that information was effectively communicated to Daniels. Regardless, Daniels appeared to be unaware of the critical time constraint as the final seconds ticked away.
Quinn defended his quarterback, stating, "Yeah, like the sequencing of that does not fall on him." However, some observers noted that removing responsibility from Daniels in such a moment might imply a lack of confidence in his situational awareness.
In contrast, Daniels accepted accountability for the team's performance. "We just have to be better," he said. "We all have to be better. Situational football. Starts with me. Everybody will say the same thing, but we have to be better at situational football."
Daniels also acknowledged the specific error: "We have to stop the clock. We have to know the situation. We have to relay that as an offense. It starts with everyone, top down. Ultimately, it's on me."
Analyzing the Aftermath
The tie altered Washington's record to 1-3-1, rather than a potential 2-3. Responsibility for the late-game breakdown has been attributed to multiple parties: Coach Quinn for overall game management, the offensive coaches for not ensuring Daniels was fully informed of the situation, and Daniels himself for lacking the necessary real-time awareness.
The incident also raised questions about the team's understanding of critical game-ending and overtime regulations. This particular moment of frustration is likely to be remembered as a significant missed opportunity for the franchise.
