College Football Playoff Landscape Sees Early Shifts After Tumultuous Opening Week
The initial week of the 2026 college football season has already brought unexpected outcomes, dramatically altering perceptions for top contenders and conference power structures.

The opening week of the 2026 college football season has already introduced significant upheaval to the playoff and National Championship discussions. Unexpected performances, both strong and disappointing, have begun to redraw the balance of power within the sport's premier conferences.
While the Indiana Hoosiers enter the season as defending national champions, having completed a dominant 16-0 campaign and bolstered their roster with another impressive transfer class under coach Curt Cignetti, many observers anticipated the Big Ten Championship race would primarily involve the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Oregon Ducks.
Early Contenders: Ohio State's Dominance and Oregon's Close Call
Ohio State certainly lived up to its billing, securing a thoroughly dominant victory over Ball State. Although not a top-tier opponent, the Buckeyes, ranked number one nationally, executed precisely as expected in their season opener. Oregon, however, navigated a much different path.
The Ducks faced considerable resistance from Boise State for much of the first half, and found themselves in a tied contest with just over eight minutes remaining after a Broncos field goal. Despite this, Oregon quickly responded with a touchdown drive to establish a 34-27 lead. Their defense then solidified, delivering back-to-back stops to seal the win. The final score, however, did not fully reflect Oregon's overall control of the game. They averaged nearly eight yards per play offensively while limiting Boise State to just 4.2. The Ducks' passing game was efficient, tallying 378 yards on 28 completions from 38 attempts, averaging 10 yards per pass attempt. Defensively, they recorded three sacks and four tackles for loss. While the margin was narrow, Oregon supporters can take encouragement from a performance that statistically warranted a more decisive outcome.
