A 23-year-old airman from North Carolina tragically died on Thursday following a heavy equipment incident at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, authorities confirmed on Friday.
The service member was identified as Airman 1st Class Cedric Eneluna. He was assigned to the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron's Pavements and Equipment Flight, according to an announcement from the base's Space Launch Delta 30 Public Affairs office.
This specialized unit is responsible for maintaining vital infrastructure, including roads and airfields, which are essential for supporting Vandenberg's launch, test, and range operations under the United States Space Force. Vandenberg is crucial for deploying satellites into polar orbit and conducting intercontinental ballistic missile tests.
Eneluna was operating a piece of heavy equipment when it rolled down an embankment. Base officials stated that no other personnel sustained injuries during the incident.
Investigation Underway
The official cause of death remains undetermined, pending review by the Santa Barbara County Coroner's Office. Units at Vandenberg are actively cooperating with a Safety Investigation Board to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Remembering Airman Eneluna
In a statement, Vandenberg Space Force Base expressed profound sorrow, stating, "It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of Airman 1st Class Cedric Eneluna, a member of the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron." The statement further highlighted his dedication: "A1C Eneluna served with honor, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his teammates and the mission. His loss is felt across our Vandenberg family."
Airman Eneluna hailed from Fayetteville, North Carolina, and also spent part of his formative years in the Philippines.
He began his military service on March 5, 2024, and arrived at Vandenberg in August for his inaugural duty assignment. There, he became a valued member of the unit's "Dirt Boyz" team, a designation for specialists in pavement and heavy equipment operations.
The base acknowledged his significant impact, noting, "During his assignment at Vandenberg, he earned the respect and admiration of those around him through his positive attitude, tireless work ethic, and willingness to help others." They added, "He made a lasting impression on his teammates through his character, dedication, and genuine care for others."
U.S. Space Force Col. James T. Horne III, who commands Space Launch Delta 30 and Vandenberg Space Force Base, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Eneluna's positive influence on his team.
His squadron commander further underscored that the young service member truly embodied the qualities of an exceptional Airman. U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Seth Poulsen, the 30th CES commander, remarked, "He brought out the best in everyone. He was always ready to work, always willing to help, and always had a positive attitude. He truly represented what it means to be an Airman."
